Trade union courses in Wolverhampton 2010 Print E-mail

Mike Edwards who spoke at our last delegate meeting is attempting to re-establish a TU studies centre in Wolverhampton/black country.
Courses being run locally by the WEA finished earlier this year, but Mike and the Shrewsbury TU Studies Centre will be running TUC Shop Stewards and Health & Safety Reps courses here from September.

UNON REPRESENTATIVES STAGE 1
10 x Mondays from 20/9/2010
This course is for new union representatives and union representatives. It will assist you to develop the skills you need to be an effective rep. As a union rep there are many tasks you will want to do, such as: working together with members and other union reps; talking to members and dealing with their problems; recruiting members and getting them involved in the union; meeting management to discuss a range of issues at work; representing your union; keeping your members in touch with wider issues.
This course will cover:

  • The job of the union rep
  • Building union membership
  • Making the union work
  • Using and making agreements
  • Representing members
  • Grievance and discipline
  • Your rights and negotiating at work
  • Equal opportunities at work
  • Developing your skills and confidence


HEALTH & SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES STAGE 1
10 x Tuesdays from 21/9/2010
The course focuses on four key areas:

  • The role and functions of a trade union health and safety representative
  • Organising for health and safety
  • Preventing accidents and ill health
  • Key skills for a trade union health and safety representative.

Time off for learning - Trade Union Representatives are entitled to reasonable paid time off to take part in education and training.
The main features of the law are:
  • the union must be recognised by the employer for the purpose of collective bargaining
  • the training must be approved by your union or the TUC
  • the training must be relevant to your duties as a representative
  • if time off is unreasonably refused, or your employer does not pay you, then you can complain to an employment tribunal

Other TUC courses, will only take place in Wolverhampton if there is demand but they are available at Shrewsbury
