Local government unions outraged at pay freeze
Local government unions, UNISON, GMB and UNITE, representing 1.6 million workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, have today been told that their members face a pay freeze in 2010/2011. The unions are calling on the local government employers to think again, saying that local government workers will struggle to afford basic essentials, with over 5% inflation rendering the pay freeze a real terms pay cut. The unions are calling for them to come to their senses and make a reasonable offer, saying that there is room in council budgets to give workers decent pay.

There were mass closures of services across the city. After morning picketing from early hours in the morning, 2000 strikers assembled in front of Civic Hall on North St. This was over three times the predicted size. We marched behind a 20 foot Pension Justice banner and the AzaadDhol players with flags, placards and local union branch banners around the city centre, followed by a rally with short speeches from local leaders of striking unions:
adult hourly rate of the minimum wage increased from £5.93 to £6.08
development rate (which will cover workers aged 18-20 years) rise from £4.92 to £4.98
rate for 16 to 17-year-olds increase from £3.64 to £3.68
apprentice minimum wage rate is just £2.60 per hour - all apprentices under the age of 19 and those aged 19 and over in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship. .
